About Us
La Liga del Barrio is Philadelphia’s first Latino youth basketball league, offering programs in other sports like track and field to Latino youth and minorities across the city. Liga provides an opportunity to develop sports skills and enjoy the game while also promoting educational achievement. The league is open for boys and girls ages 6 to 18 and can consist of up to 32 teams per season. As of 2021, the league expanded to include young adults ages 19-25 with its Alumni League. This year (2022-23) Liga was selected by the Jr. NBA to pilot the first ever Jr. NBA League on the East Coast. Our student-athletes were the haltime event at the Sixers Games to kick start the Jr. NBA league kick-off!
Each player receives a jersey, and takes part in our annual “Liga Draft Day” in which all players present are drafted in early January. The league begins with scrimmages in early December. The official season begins in January with nine (9) official league games, played on Friday evenings (for ages 6 to 8), and Saturdays (ages 9 to 18). Alumni League games are currently being played on Friday evenings with some games being held on Saturdays. League Registration Fees for Liga is one of the lowest in the City of Philadelphia. Players also get to participate in a year-end Awards Ceremony. Shortly after the award ceremony Liga will follow with its 2nd Annual Liga Gala. Sponsorship interest for the Gala can be found above in the Gala tab under Events.
